Wang Yi warns U.S. not to suppress China’s development when meeting Blinken

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the U.S. not to suppress China’s development during talks with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday in Beijing. Blinken is visiting China from April 24 to 26. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that China views and develops China-U.S. relations from the world vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind. He said China’s position and request on China-U.S. ties have always been consistent. China adheres to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation and commits to promoting the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations, he added. China proposes that each other’s core interests should be respected and urges the U.S. not to interfere in China’s internal affairs or cross red lines when it comes to China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, he said. Wang said that under the leadership of the two heads of state, China-U.S. relations have been stabilized from further deterioration, and bilateral dialogue, cooperation and positive aspects in various fields have increased, which is welcomed by the two peoples and the international community. On the other hand, China-U.S. relations are still facing increasing negative factors and various disruptions, Wang said, adding that China’s legitimate development rights are being unreasonably suppressed and China’s core interests have been constantly challenged. He stressed that whether China and the U.S. should stick to the right path of stability or repeat the mistake of a downward spiral is a major issue facing the two countries, which tests the sincerity and capability of both sides. The world is waiting to see whether the two countries will lead international cooperation to address global issues and achieve win-win outcomes, or confront each other, even breaking out into conflicts and leading to a lose-lose situation, Wang added.  CGTN

China launches Shenzhou-18 manned mission, sending three-member crew to space

China launched the Shenzhou-18 manned spaceship on Thursday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced. A Long March-2F carrier rocket carrying the Shenzhou-18 spacecraft with three Chinese astronauts blasted off at 8:59 p.m. Beijing Time. About 10 minutes later, the spacecraft separated from the rocket and entered the planned orbit. The spacecraft will conduct autonomous, fast rendezvous and docking with the space station. The Shenzhou-18 crew will conduct in-orbit rotation with the Shenzhou-17 crew. The mission is China’s first manned mission to the space station this year, the third since the space station entered application and development phase, China’s 32nd manned flight into space, and the 518th flight mission of the Long March series rockets. The mission marks China’s 13th manned spaceflight mission since the launch of the manned space program and represents the first manned mission to the China Space Station this year. A send-off ceremony for the Shenzhou-18 crew was held earlier on Thursday at the launch center. Click here to watch the rebroadcast. The three-member crew is scheduled to stay at the China Space Station for about six months and return to the Dongfeng landing site in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in late October. About the crew Astronauts Ye Guangfu, Li Cong and Li Guangsu are members of the Shenzhou-18 crew. Ye was also a crew member of China’s Shenzhou-13 mission. Both Li Cong and Li Guangsu are part of the country’s third batch of astronauts, and the Shenzhou-18 mission is their first flight mission. All three of them were born in the 1980s. During their stay in orbit, the Shenzhou-18 crew will receive the Tianzhou-8 cargo ship and the Shenzhou-19 crewed spaceship. Check out the profile of the Shenzhou-18 crew members. About the missions The Shenzhou-18 crew will carry out six cargo outbound deliveries via the station’s cargo airlock module and implement two to three extravehicular activities (EVAs). During the EVAs, the astronauts will install space debris protection reinforcements for extravehicular piping, cables and critical equipment and carry out extravehicular inspections, as appropriate, to further safeguard the safety of the China Space Station, the CMSA announced on Wednesday. The crew will utilize the scientific experiment cabinets and extravehicular payloads to carry out more than 90 experiments in the fields of basic physics in microgravity, space material science, space life science, space medicine and space technology. « During the Shenzhou-18 mission, experimental equipment and related samples will be taken to space, and the country’s first in-orbit aquatic ecological research project will be implemented. Using zebrafish and hornwort to establish a self-cycling aquatic ecosystem in orbit, the project aims to make a breakthrough in the cultivation of vertebrates in space, » Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, said on Wednesday. « The world’s first in-orbit stem cell study on the plant’s stem tips will be made to reveal the mechanism of plant evolutionary adaptation to gravity and provide theoretical support for space cropping, » Lin added. President Xi: China-Germany cooperation not ‘risk’ but opportunity

The mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Germany is not a « risk, » Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday. Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Scholz, who visited Chongqing and Shanghai on the first two days of his three-day trip to China. Xi has called on both China and Germany to be vigilant against rising protectionism and view the issue of production capacity objectively and dialectically. Noting that the industrial and supply chains of China and Germany are deeply intertwined and the markets of the two countries are highly interdependent, Xi said mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Germany is not a « risk » but a guarantee for the stability of bilateral relations and an opportunity for the future. Xi stressed that China and Germany have enormous potential for win-win cooperation in traditional fields such as machinery manufacturing and automobiles and in emerging fields such as green transformation, digitalization and artificial intelligence.  « China’s exports of electric vehicles, lithium batteries and photovoltaic products have not only enriched global supply and alleviated global inflationary pressure but also contributed greatly to the global response to climate change and green and low-carbon transformation, » Xi said. China is committed to the basic national policy of opening up and hopes that the German side can provide a fair, transparent, open and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises in Germany, President Xi stressed. ‘Long-term, strategic perspective’ Noting that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the all-round strategic partnership between China and Germany, Xi said that over the past 10 years, despite tremendous changes in the international landscape, China-Germany relations have maintained steady growth, and bilateral cooperation has strengthened and deepened across the board, providing impetus for the development of both countries. Currently, transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe, and humanity faces growing risks and challenges, he noted. These problems cannot be resolved without major-country cooperation, Xi said. As China and Germany are respectively the second and third largest economies in the world, the consolidation and development of their relations carries significance that goes beyond the bilateral scope and has a major impact on the Eurasian continent and the entire world, Xi said, calling on the two countries to view and develop bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and work together to inject greater stability and certainty into the world. He underscored that both China and Germany have made major contributions to the progress of human civilization. The two countries do not have clashing fundamental interests between them and pose no security threat to each other, he stated, adding that cooperation between China and Germany benefits not just the two sides but also the world at large. The more instability in the world, the greater the need for the two sides to strengthen the resilience and vitality of their relations, Xi said, calling for joint efforts to keep to the overall direction of cooperation and development in growing bilateral ties and stick to the characterization of an all-round strategic partnership. China’s policy toward Germany is highly stable and consistent, Xi said, noting that the two sides need to continue engaging in close exchanges with an open mind and enhance strategic mutual trust. As long as the two sides uphold mutual respect, seek common ground while reserving differences, enhance exchanges and mutual learning, and pursue win-win cooperation, China-Germany relations will continue to enjoy solid and sustained progress, he added. For his part, Scholz noted that Germany-China relations are now in good shape. The two countries have had close exchanges at all levels and in all fields, he said. The two sides have successfully held intergovernmental consultations and high-level dialogues on strategic and financial issues and will hold a dialogue on climate change and green transition, Scholz added. The German chancellor said that in Chongqing and Shanghai, he had experienced the tremendous achievements of China’s economic development in recent years and was impressed by the close cooperation between the business communities of Germany and China.  He voiced opposition to protectionism and expressed support for free trade, saying Germany is willing to strengthen relations with China, deepen dialogue and cooperation in various fields and promote people-to-people exchanges in education, culture and other areas, which he said are crucial for Germany, China and the world. As an important member of the European Union, Germany is ready to play a positive role in promoting the sound development of EU-China relations, Scholz added. Collaboration on multilateral fronts Underscoring that China and Germany share a lot in common on the issue of world multipolarity, Xi pointed out that a multipolar world is, in essence, one where countries with different civilizations, systems and paths respect each other and coexist in peace. He said China and Germany need to independently carry out collaboration on multilateral fronts, push the international community to take real actions to better address global challenges such as climate change, unbalanced development and regional conflicts, and make greater contributions to the balance and stability of the world. The German side stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with the Chinese side to jointly tackle climate change and other global challenges, commits to upholding the multilateral international order and promoting world peace and development, and disapproves of conflict and confrontation, Scholz said, adding that Germany opposes protectionism and supports free trade. The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis, the Gaza conflict, and other international and regional issues of common concern. China is not a party to the Ukraine crisis but has consistently promoted talks for peace in its own way, Xi said. China encourages and supports all efforts that are conducive to the peaceful resolution of the crisis and supports the holding in due course of an international peace conference that is recognized by both Russia and Ukraine and which ensures the equal participation of all parties and fair discussions on all peace plans, he stated. China will maintain close communication with all

Chinese, U.S. presidents hold phone talks

On Tuesday evening, President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden on the phone at the latter’s request. The two presidents had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations and issues of mutual interest. Xi recalled his meeting with President Biden in San Francisco last November, saying it opened a future-oriented San Francisco vision. Over the past months, officials from the two sides have acted on the presidential understandings in earnest, Xi said, adding that the China-U.S. relationship is beginning to stabilize, which is welcomed by both societies and the international community. However, Xi said the negative factors of the relationship have also been growing, and this requires attention from both sides. President Xi noted that the issue of strategic perception is always fundamental to the China-U.S. relationship, « just like the first button of a shirt that must be put right. » The Chinese president said that two large countries, China and the U.S., should not cut off their ties or turn their backs on each other, much less slide into conflict or confrontation. He called on the two sides to respect each other, coexist in peace, and pursue win-win cooperation. The relationship should continue moving forward in a stable, sound, and sustainable way rather than going backward. Xi underlined three overarching principles that should guide China-U.S. relations in 2024. « First, peace must be valued. The two sides should put a floor of no conflict and no confrontation under the relationship and keep reinforcing the positive outlook of the relationship, » he said. Second, stability must be prioritized. He said the two sides should refrain from setting the relationship back, provoking incidents or crossing the line to maintain the overall stability of the relationship. Third, credibility must be upheld. Xi said the two sides should honor their commitments to each other with action and turn the « San Francisco Vision » into reality. He added that the two sides need to strengthen dialogue in a mutually respectful way, manage differences prudently, advance cooperation in the spirit of mutual benefit, and step up coordination on international affairs in a responsible way. Xi made it clear that « China is not going to sit on its hands » in the face of « Taiwan independence » separatist activities and external encouragement and support for them. Noting that the U.S. side has adopted a string of measures to suppress China’s trade and technology development and is adding more and more Chinese entities to its sanctions lists, Xi said, « This is not ‘de-risking’ but creating risks. » « If the U.S. side is willing to seek mutually beneficial cooperation and share in China’s development dividends, it will always find China’s door open. But if it is adamant on containing China’s hi-tech development and depriving China of its legitimate right to development, China is not going to sit back and watch, » he said. Xi also elaborated on China’s position on issues related to Hong Kong, human rights and the South China Sea. For his part, Biden said the U.S.-China relationship is the most consequential relationship in the world. Biden noted that the progress made in bilateral relations since the San Francisco meeting demonstrates that both sides can actively advance cooperation while managing differences responsibly. He reiterated that the U.S. does not seek a new Cold War. Its objective is not to change China’s system, its alliances are not targeted against China, the U.S. does not support « Taiwan independence, » and the U.S. does not seek conflict with China, he said. Biden said the U.S. adheres to the one-China policy, adding that China’s development is beneficial to the world, and the U.S. does not seek to curtail China’s development or « decouple » from China. He said the U.S. will send Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to visit China shortly to strengthen dialogue and communication, avoid miscalculation, and promote cooperation to advance the relationship on a stable path and jointly respond to global challenges. According to the statement released by the Chinese side, the two heads of state also exchanged views on issues such as the Ukraine crisis and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The two presidents found the phone call to be candid and constructive, the statement said. The two sides agreed to stay in communication and tasked their teams to deliver on the San Francisco vision, including advancing the consultation mechanisms on diplomatic, economic, financial, commercial and other issues, as well as military-to-military communication, carrying out dialogue and cooperation in areas such as counternarcotics, artificial intelligence and climate response, taking further steps to expand people-to-people exchanges and enhancing communication on international and regional issues. The statement said the Chinese side welcomed Treasury Secretary Yellen and Secretary of State Blinken’s visits to China. CGTN

Chinese and Beninese FMs hail bilateral ties in Beijing

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Beninese Foreign Minister Shegun Adjadi Bakari hailed bilateral ties in a meeting in Beijing on Thursday, the first day of Bakari’s official visit to China. Beninese President Patrice Talon made a successful visit to China in September, when the two countries’ leaders jointly announced the establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Benin, which will lead bilateral ties to a new stage, said Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. China-Benin relations have maintained a high level of development, with mutual political trust and solid progress in various fields of cooperation, Wang said, adding that China attaches great importance to its relations with Benin and is willing to lead the development of bilateral relations based on the important consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders, promoting greater development in bilateral relations. He said China will continue to firmly support Benin in pursuing a development path that suits its national conditions and be a sincere friend and reliable partner for Benin in its exploration and promotion of its own modernization.  Both sides should vigorously expand pragmatic cooperation in trade, investment, energy, culture, human resources, and other fields, and welcome Benin’s active participation in implementing global development initiatives, Wang said. Bakari said Benin is ready to work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, promote common values, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, and push Benin-China relations to achieve greater development. Benin highly appreciates the efforts made by the Chinese government to promote a cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, especially the crucial role it played in the adoption of the ceasefire resolution by the UN Security Council, Bakari said. He said Benin is willing to strengthen coordination with China in the United Nations Human Rights Council, jointly safeguard the interests of developing countries, and promote the healthy development of international human rights. Xi Jinping expects more China-U.S. mutual trust to resist disruptions

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on people from all walks of life in both China and the U.S. to have more contacts and exchanges, continue to build a consensus, enhance trust, steer clear of disruptions and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. Xi made the remarks during his meeting with representatives from American business, strategic and academic communities in Beijing. He called for bringing more tangible benefits to the people of the two countries and injecting more stability into the world. Noting that the China-U.S. relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world, Xi said whether China and the U.S. engage in cooperation or confrontation is critical to the well-being of the two peoples, and the future of humanity. The respective successes of China and the U.S. are opportunities for each other, Xi said, adding that as long as both sides regard each other as partners, respect each other, coexist peacefully and cooperate for win-win results, China-U.S. relations will be improved. As this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S., Xi pointed out that the history of China-U.S. relations is a history of friendly exchanges between the two peoples, with the past written by the people and the future created by the people. Sustainable economy « The Chinese economy is sound and sustainable, » Xi said, noting that last year, China registered one of the highest growth rates among the major economies and accounted for over 30 percent of global growth as before. « China did not collapse as predicted by the ‘China collapse theory,’ nor will it peak as forecasted by the ‘China peak theory, » Xi told the U.S. guests. The Chinese president reiterated that China will continue to advance high-quality development and Chinese modernization, enable the Chinese people to live a better life, and contribute more to sustainable development in the world. Xi also recalled his oft-repeated saying that reform and opening up holds the key to contemporary China’s catching up with the times in great strides. « China’s reform will not pause, and its opening up will not stop, » said Xi. China is planning and implementing a series of major measures to comprehensively deepen reform, foster a world-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based and internationalized, and provides broader development space for international businesses including U.S. companies, Xi added. Xi pointed out that faced with the recent years’ new and evolving situation in China-U.S. business ties, the two sides should stay committed to mutual respect, mutual benefit and equal-footed consultation, follow economic and market rules, expand and deepen mutually beneficial business cooperation, respect each other’s development rights, and work for win-win outcomes for the two countries and the world at large. More common interests President Xi emphasized that over the past couple of years, the China-U.S. relationship experienced some setbacks and serious challenges, from which lessons should be learned. « The relationship cannot go back to the old days, but it can embrace a brighter future. » Noting the two sides maintained communication and made progress in the political and diplomatic, economic and financial, law enforcement and counternarcotics, climate change and people-to-people fields in the past few months, Xi said under the new circumstances, « China and the U.S. have more, not fewer, common interests. » China and the United States should help rather than hinder each other’s development, both in traditional areas such as trade and agriculture and in emerging areas such as climate change and artificial intelligence, he added. Xi urged the United States to work with China in the same direction, establish a correct strategic perception, and properly handle sensitive issues to maintain the momentum for bilateral relations to stabilize from a downward spiral. In their remarks, Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations Evan G. Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of Blackstone Stephen A. Schwarzman, President and CEO of Qualcomm Cristiano R. Amon, Founding Dean of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Graham Allison, and President of the U.S.-China Business Council Craig Allen thanked President Xi for taking time to meet them. They noted that China’s exceptional economic growth and transformation over the past decades speak to its strong resilience and vitality and expressed confidence that China will realize its development goals and contribute to a stronger, more integrated global economy. Sharing close economic ties, the United States and China can only develop and thrive in peaceful coexistence. The Thucydides trap is not inevitable, they said. According to them, the U.S. business, strategic and academic communities support the United States and China in bolstering exchanges and communication at all levels, enhancing mutual understanding, trust and cooperation, joining hands to address global challenges, and fostering a stable, sustainable and productive U.S.-China relationship.
